Flumserberg
A pristine winter landscape, stunning views, and easy walking on groomed trails
By the Numbers
After a long week at work, I didn’t have the energy for a full day of cross country skiing. Looking for something to do outside but a bit less taxing, I read about the winterwanderweg opportuntiies at Flumersberg, the local resort for all those living in Zürich. This seemed an ideal compromise.
It’s really hard to overemphasize how well Europe marks trails compared to my usual forays in the Olympics and Cascades. The walking trail was well marked, the trail having been groomed explicitly for those on foot. There were a few times where the trail crossed the downhill skiers which wasn’t ideal but it proved to be completely navigable.
The entire experience was delightful. The views, even on a snowy and cloudy, were terrific and the blowing snow added a sense of romance. I’m hooked on the simplicity of winter walking.
